Construction of The Randolph Hotel began in 1864 by William Wilkinson, an architect who also designed many houses in North Oxford. There was debate about the building's design. John Ruskin favoured Gothic revival like the nearby Martyrs' Memorial. The City Council wanted a classical style since the rest of Beaumont Street was early 19th century Regency. A compromise was attained with a simplified Gothic façade, similar to the Oxford University Museum and the Oxford Union buildings, but in brick.

The hotel was named not after Lord Randolph Churchill, who was connected with Blenheim Palace to the north of Oxford, but after Dr. Francis Randolph, an eighteenth century university benefactor. The University or Randolph Galleries (now part of the Ashmolean Museum) were built as a result of a thousand-pound gift left by Dr Randolph, a former Principal of St Alban Hall (now part of Merton College), who died in 1796.

Tudor cottage built in the 16th Century and split into two dwellings. The room we call 'Strawberry Sherbet' was the sweet shop/grocery store certainly by the 1900s, if not earlier. Part of the Luttrell's significant estate, in 1947 the family sold it to the then owners for the princely sum of £48.

It's a cob cottage, which is lime render over cobblestone, with a thatched roof. As with all the properties on this part of Vicarage Road, the chimneys are especially high to allow a fire to draw.

Most of the houses in the conservation area are Grade II listed. Known as “Higher Town”, the cottages housed workers employed on the Dunster castle estate. This is the quietest, oldest and prettiest part of Minehead. The Old Sweet Shop was the centre of this tiny hamlet's daily life in the 1900s and on.

The land was donated by the duchy to the diocese and the then Prince of Wales part paid to build the house to attract Edward Benson to the area. He was appointed first Bishop of Truro and went on to be archbishop of Canterbury and is buried in Westminster cathedral. (He never did end up staying here after all it should be stated).

The Radnor Estate developed most of Bouverie Road West at the end of the 19th Century as large individual buildings, which they then issued on long leases before finally relinquishing the freeholds. After retiring from the army Colonel Henry Torrens Kenny and his wife Zoe bought the property from Viscount Folkestone in December 1928.
Zoe was active in the suffragette movement but died in 1934. Her husband lived in the house until his death in 1941.
